Before destroying the outpost, Vader finds the name of a once Jedi master that has survived order 66…Kirak Infil’a. There, he takes down an entire battalion of clone troopers. His ruthlessness is proven further as he flies to the Mid-Rim Jedi outpost known as Brighthome. As his power grows so lessens the light side, and Anakin himself. In these moments we get a glimpse of how powerful he was becoming with the dark side of the force. Using only the force, Vader is relentless and easily reclaims what is his.
He comes across a gang of pirates that has seized his property. After being dropped off on a planet in the mid rim, Vader must find the ship that the Emperor had left behind for him. Without a lightsaber, Vader begins the quest that has been bestowed upon him. This is the first time in canon that we learn how the red glow of a Sith’s lightsaber is generated. Once the crystal can no longer take the agony of that pain, a beautiful crimson color will appear. Through the use of the dark side, one must pour their pain into kyber crystal. We learn from the Emperor how the lightsaber of a Sith is turned into the infamous crimson color. To do this, Vader must find a living Jedi, destroy them, and take their lightsaber.
Reeling with rage and revenge, Vader is set out on his first mission from his new master To create a new lightsaber. The foul Lord Sidious begins torturing Vader to teach him how pain is an essential part of the dark side. We start off as Vader is being told of Padme’s death by the Emperor. (This is part one of a two-part breakdown on the first two volumes so far.)
Let’s take a deep dive into what we have digested in volume 1 so far in this astounding series. Written by Charles Soule and illustrated by Guiseppe Camuncoli and Cam Smith, the comic takes place right after the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. Fans were not apprised of the early days of Vader until Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith comic series came out in November of 2017. We witness the rise and eventual fall of the brash and at times “not by the Jedi code” character. Anakin’s backstory is further delved into with the prequel films and the phenomenal Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie and animated series. We also ascertain that he was once Anakin Skywalker, father of Luke and Leia and former Jedi Knight. In the original trilogy, we learn that he is a servant to the sinister Emperor Palpatine. The moment he stepped onto the corridors of the Tantive IV in Star Wars: A New Hope, Darth Vader instantaneously became a legend in Star Wars lore.
